The hemp CRC - a bold vision to build strong foundations for a secure & sustainable hemp industry for Australia and the world.

Hemp is a key crop for the future.

Australia must take advantage of this opportunity.

Our nation has the land, climate, resources and industry positioned to scale, enabling our economy to quickly burgeon in this emerging and fast-growing sector.

Through the research programs co-designed with the industry, the hemp CRC will address the issues of climate variability and carbon sequestration, human health, animal welfare, sustainability, farming diversity and sovereign manufacturing.

To take advantage of the opportunities provided by hemp we need to take a whole of supply chain approach to the industry through an integrated research program - the hemp CRC is the vehicle to drive the bold vision.

  • Existing hemp markets strengthened and diversified
  • Supply chains stabilised
  • New products created and market sectors captured
  • Innovation uplift achieved
  • Data-driven policy and evidence
  • Expanded industry expertise
  • New jobs, business and economic growth

Mission

Providing a unified platform for hemp stakeholders to build confidence in a sustainable and profitable hemp industry

What is a CRC?

  • Cooperative Research Centres are industry-led programs with matched Commonwealth funding.
  • CRCs support collaboration between industry, business, researchers, government and the community.
  • The hemp CRC will identify and overcome barriers to productivity, competitiveness and the sustainability of the hemp industry.
  • The program will drive innovation and commercialisation, delivering economic benefits to the Australian community and economy.
  • The hemp CRC will establish a not-for-profit company limited by guarantee and governed by an expert and independent board.
  • The program will run for 10 years.

Why Hemp?

Hemp is an extraordinary, game-changing crop.

  • Hemp is good for the environment. It grows fast, is drought-tolerant, sequesters carbon and builds soil health.
  • Hemp is nutritionally rich. The seeds contain high-quality protein and can be used whole, or to produce oils and flour.
  • Hemp has industrial uses. These range from building products, such as hemp-based composites and hempcrete, to cotton and synthetic fibre substitutes.
  • Hemp is good for our health. CBD, or cannabidiol, is extracted from hemp and used in medicinal cannabis. This product is increasingly recognised for its multiple benefits, including the ability to deliver anti-anxiety effects.
  • Hemp helps animals too. It is a high-protein, high-fat stock food. Hemp’s anti-inflammatory properties make it useful for pets and in veterinary medicine.
  • Hemp benefits growers. It is a high-value crop that enables growers to diversify their farming systems and build soil health through crop rotation.
